Private or group lessons?

Choose a lesson format around your group’s ability, goals and budget.

  • Private lessons: one-to-one or just your own party. The instructor can focus on your goals and adjust the pace. The trade-off is cost. Useful for working on specific skills; ask the school whether a mixed-ability family can learn together.
  • Group / ski-school lessons: better value, and sociable. Check that the group level and age range suit you. Look for small group sizes so you're not straining to hear the instructor at the back.

Ski schools in Châtel

Châtel has both French and British-run options, most with English-speaking instructors.

ESF Châtel

ESF runs group and private lessons. In 2026/27, group lessons meet only at Super-Châtel from January 3 to February 5 and March 7–19; from March 21 to the season’s end they meet only at Pré la Joux. Both areas are used during other periods, but the exact meeting point depends on the course. Check your booking before choosing accommodation.

For children, the Piou Piou club runs at Le Village des Marmottons, its own fenced area with a chalet and a conveyor lift, taking ages 3 to 5 and splitting the three-year-olds from the four and five-year-olds. From about five they move into the Ourson through Étoile d'Or grades, the French grading system used for children through to around 13. esf-chatel.com

British Alpine Ski School (BASS)

BASS offers English-language instruction in Châtel and has taught in the French Alps since 1991. Adult group courses run at three levels, from first-time skiing to developing and refining parallel turns, and private lessons are there for individual goals. They teach snowboarding as well as skiing. britishskischool.com

Independent English-speaking private instructors also work the resort; several have decades in the area.

Snowboarding

MINT Snowboarding teaches snowboarding in Morzine, Avoriaz, Les Gets and Châtel. Confirm the lesson location and level when booking.

They run private lessons and small-group sessions, multi-day courses, and week-long camps that bundle the coaching with accommodation. Backcountry and splitboarding courses are also available. mintsnowboarding.com

Kids and first-timers

Options in Châtel include private lessons pitched at children and dedicated beginner areas. The ESF runs its Club Piou Piou at Le Village des Marmottons, a fenced, purpose-built area with its own chalet and conveyor lift, for ages 3 to 5. It's a ski club rather than a crèche, so children are there to learn, not to be looked after while you ski.

Beginners and children spend time standing during lessons. Pack layers for that lower activity level, and keep gloves dry.

When to book

Book lessons early for Christmas and February school breaks, especially if you need a private instructor or a particular morning slot. Confirm the meeting point before choosing your accommodation or rental shop.
