Match gear to the conditions
Choose a resort, month and how warm you run.

Plan your layers
Start with your resort and month, then adjust the layers for the current mountain forecast, time spent on lifts and how readily you feel the cold.
Weather protection
Start at 15,000 mm waterproofing with fully taped seams. Consider 20,000 mm for wetter months. Below -10°C / 14°F, allow more warmth for lifts and stops; in wind, check that your hood and cuffs close securely.
Different brands test breathability in different ways, so their figures are not always comparable. Good vents are useful whatever the number.
Before you buy
Check the fit with your usual layers. Make sure the hood, cuffs, vents, pockets and snow gaiters work for you.
Data source
Weather ranges use DWD ICON-DREAM-EU v1.0 daily data for 2010-2025. Piste locations come from OpenSkiMap and OpenStreetMap contributors. Weather is averaged across areas about 6.5 km wide, so always check a current mountain forecast.
