The Cortina guide

Cortina d’Ampezzo combines a substantial town with three separate ski areas beneath the Dolomite cliffs. Plan your days around the area you want to ski and the transport between them.

The resort

Cortina d'Ampezzo sits at about 1,225 m in the broad Ampezzo basin of the Boite valley, ringed by Dolomite cliffs. It hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and again (seventy years later) in 2026, with the women’s alpine racing on the Olympia delle Tofane and the sliding sports in the new center.

The skiing

Three areas ring the town. The Tofane side is the biggest: 35 slopes over Socrepes, Pocol, Rumerlo and Col Druscié, reached by the Freccia nel Cielo ("arrow in the sky") lifts, home of the World Cup and Olympic courses. Faloria–Cristallo rises straight from town on the cable car running since 1939. 5 Torri–Lagazuoi, out at the passes and linked in by the Cortina Skyline gondola, offers the 8 km descent from the Lagazuoi, horse-drawn sled section included. It's Dolomiti Superski, so the wider 12-valley network is one pass away.

Snow & weather

Dolomite skiing leans on snowmaking (the local consortium claims 95% coverage) under a drier, sunnier climate than the western Alps: snowmaking and grooming support the pistes. The month-by-month record, in °C and °F, is on the Cortina snow & weather page.

Lessons & ski schools

Cortina has several ski schools serving its separate mountain areas. Confirm the course location, teaching language and transport before booking, especially if part of the group will ski elsewhere during lessons.

Passes

Two tiers: the Cortina valley pass (around 120 km, including San Vito, Auronzo and Misurina) and the full Dolomiti Superski: 12 valleys, about 1,200 km, one card. Both are sold through the consortium's shop at skipasscortina.com via the My Dolomiti Card.

Where to stay

Stay near the center for Corso Italia's shops and bars, with the Faloria cable car at its edge. The Tofane side's lift bases (Socrepes, Pocol, Col Druscié) provide accommodation near the slopes a short bus ride out, and the Acquabona parking lot runs a free shuttle for drivers.

Getting there

Venice (162 km) and Treviso (130 km) are the airports, with Cortina Express, Flixbus and ATVO coaches running direct from Venice airport and Mestre station to the town's terminal; Innsbruck (170 km) works from the north. The nearest railheads are Calalzo di Cadore (35 km) and Dobbiaco (31 km), both connected by bus, and drivers arrive on the SS51 Alemagna.

Beyond the pistes

You can skate in the 1956 Olympic Ice Stadium, walk eleven signposted winter routes or six official snowshoe itineraries (including Malga Ra Stua), and the town adds ice climbing and curling. The town also has shops and cafés for time away from the mountain.

Who it suits

Cortina gives mixed groups a town base and several separate areas of groomed skiing. Choose accommodation around the lifts or bus connections you expect to use most.

Quick answers

Is Cortina part of Dolomiti Superski? Yes: a founding member, since 1974. The local valley pass covers around 120 km including San Vito, Auronzo and Misurina; the Dolomiti Superski pass opens all 12 valleys and roughly 1,200 km of pistes on one card.

How is the skiing arranged in Cortina? Three areas around the town: the Tofane (the biggest, with the World Cup and Olympic slopes above Socrepes and Col Druscié), Faloria–Cristallo (reached by the 1939 cable car straight from town), and 5 Torri–Lagazuoi, whose 8 km descent includes a horse-drawn sled connection. The Skyline gondola links the Tofane and 5 Torri sides.
