The Kitzbühel guide

Kitzbühel pairs a historic walled town with the slopes used for the Hahnenkamm races. The medieval center, ski terrain and surrounding villages offer several ways to spend a week here.

The resort

Kitzbühel’s historic center has gabled buildings and painted façades between the Hahnenkamm and Kitzbüheler Horn mountains. The Hahnenkamm races bring a particularly busy period in January; check the event dates when choosing accommodation.

The skiing

KitzSki covers 233 km in three zones on one pass: the main Hahnenkamm–Pengelstein circuit rolling toward Kirchberg, the Kitzbüheler Horn across town, and Jochberg–Pass Thurn at the southern end, linked in part by the 3S cable car. The Hahnenkammbahn and Hornbahn both leave from the town itself. The Streif is the Hahnenkamm downhill course. Recreational skiers can take the Streif Family Run (Run 21), which bypasses the steepest race sections.

Snow & weather

At 762 m, the town can have very different conditions from the mountain. Snowmaking supports the ski area, but check open terrain for early- and late-season trips. The month-by-month record, in °C and °F, is on the Kitzbühel snow & weather page.

Lessons & ski schools

Kitzbühel has ski schools for children and adults. Choose the learning area and lesson format first, then check the daily journey from your accommodation rather than booking solely by distance to any lift.

Passes

KitzSki sells day, hourly, 2-14-day, option and smartphone tickets for the Kitzbühel–Kirchberg–Mittersill region through its webshop at shop.kitzski.at, the ticket machines and the app. Pass holders in ski clothing ride ÖBB trains free along the valley between St. Johann, Westendorf and the Hahnenkamm station.

Where to stay

For a town stay, stay inside or near the old center and both home lifts are walkable. Nearby villages offer other bases: Reith and Aurach for quiet and value near town, Jochberg for direct access to the southern zone's skiing without the town bustle. Kirchberg, over the hill, shares the mountain from the other side.

Getting there

Kitzbühel keeps three railway stations: Hauptbahnhof, Zentrum–Hahnenkamm and Schwarzsee, and the tourism office's own advice is that the train often beats the car. By air, the town sits centrally between Innsbruck, Salzburg and Munich, all workable transfer bases.

Beyond the pistes

The Museum Kitzbühel holds the Alfons Walde collection (known for his winter landscapes) in two of its oldest buildings. The 3.3 km Gaisberg toboggan run is in Kirchberg, with night sessions listed Tuesday to Saturday from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, the Aquarena has a pool, and the town has a casino and bars.

Who it suits

Kitzbühel combines a historic town with a large area of intermediate skiing. If snow at village level matters to you, weigh the low elevation against the shops, restaurants and rail access.

Quick answers

What is the Streif? The Hahnenkamm downhill: the race course, dropping back into town off Kitzbühel's home mountain. Recreational skiers can use the Streif Family Run (Run 21), which bypasses the race line's extremes; the January race weekend is a busy period for the town.

How big is the KitzSki area? A 233 km single-pass area in three zones: the main Hahnenkamm–Pengelstein circuit toward Kirchberg, the Kitzbüheler Horn across town, and Jochberg–Pass Thurn at the southern end. The pass also covers riding ÖBB trains in ski gear along the valley.

Is Kitzbühel snow-reliable at 762 m? Snow conditions in the low-lying town can differ from the higher ski area. Snowmaking supports operations, but early- and late-season trips still need a check of open terrain. Use the monthly snow and weather page for the climate baseline and the operator’s reports for current conditions.
