The Verbier guide

Verbier occupies a sunny plateau in the Valais and provides access to the 4 Vallées. Its terrain, international community and lively village make it a popular base for a longer ski trip.

The resort

Verbier sits on a wide, sunny plateau at 1,500 m in the Val de Bagnes, with views of the Valais mountains. The village has an international community and busy evenings, with lift access from both Médran and Savoleyres.

The skiing

Verbier is the hub of the 4 Vallées: Verbier, Bruson, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Thyon, 410 km of ski runs and freeride routes topping out at Mont Fort, reached by cable car at 3,330 m. The lifts leave from Médran at the top of the village, where the gondola from Le Châble also arrives; the Savoleyres gondola at the other end of town opens the quieter La Tzoumaz side, and Bruson sits across the valley.

Verbier’s marked, ungroomed itineraries include Mont-Gelé, Col des Mines, Vallon d’Arbi and the Mur de Chassoure. They require different skills from groomed pistes. Check the local route classification, opening status and conditions, and use qualified guidance where appropriate.

Snow & weather

The village is sunny and mid-height at 1,500 m; the skiing climbs nearly 2,000 m above it, so the top half of the area can remain cold while snow near the village softens. The month-by-month picture, in °C and °F, is on the Verbier snow & weather page.

Lessons & ski schools

Swiss Ski School, Adrenaline, Altitude, Warren Smith Ski Academy, European Snowsport and New Generation are among the options. Les Esserts is a beginner area above the village; confirm the meeting point and how to reach it with your equipment.

Passes

Choose a Verbier-sector pass covering Verbier, La Tzoumaz–Savoleyres and Bruson, or the full 4 Vallées (410 km, 72 lifts). Compare coverage and advance-purchase discounts in the official shop at verbier4vallees.ch.

Where to stay

Compare Médran and Place Centrale: the lifts leave from Médran, the village life happens around the square about a kilometer away, and free shuttles run year-round between the two and out to Savoleyres. Staying in Le Châble, the valley town below, is an option for rail access and different accommodation prices: the gondola runs from about 5 am to midnight, giving access for early starts and late returns.

Getting there

Take the train to Le Châble, then the gondola straight to Médran or the bus to the center: about 2h40 from Geneva all in, 1h10 from Sion. By car it's roughly 1h50 from Geneva and 3h15 from Zurich, and the village is reachable by road year-round.

Beyond the pistes

Pedestrians can ride to Mont Fort for the view and a fondue meal. Other activities include the forest toboggan run toward La Tzoumaz, paragliding from Les Ruinettes at 2,200 m and the 1.4 km Mont Fort zipline. Check access and booking requirements for each.

Who it suits

Verbier’s demanding pistes and ungroomed itineraries give experienced skiers plenty to plan around. Compare Le Châble or the other 4 Vallées villages if you prefer a quieter base, checking the journey to your intended sector.

Quick answers

How big is the 4 Vallées? 410 km of ski runs and freeride routes across six resorts (Verbier, Bruson, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Thyon) the largest ski area lying entirely in Switzerland, topping out at Mont Fort (3,330 m). Passes are sold by sector, so you only buy the full area if you plan to use it.

Is Verbier only for experts? No. Seven marked, ungroomed freeride routes (Mont-Gelé, Col des Mines, Vallon d'Arbi and more) require skills beyond groomed-piste skiing. There's a full spread of pistes and a dozen ski schools: the beginner area at Les Esserts sits above the village.

How do you get to Verbier? Take the train to Le Châble, then the gondola to Médran, which runs roughly 5 am to midnight, or a bus to the center. From Geneva it's about 1h50 by car or 2h40 by rail; Zurich is around 3h15 by car; Sion, with its regional airport, is 1h10 by rail.
