A shell you can build layers around
Burton uses a two-layer DRYRIDE fabric with a nylon taffeta lining. The lining has no padding, so warmth comes from your base layer and any fleece or insulated midlayer underneath.
The regular fit is intended to leave room for those layers without being as loose as Burton’s relaxed cuts. This makes the Reserve worth considering for a trip with both cold mornings and warmer lower runs.
Rain, snow and ventilation
Fully taped seams protect the stitching, and an internal flap sits behind the front zipper. The helmet-compatible hood adjusts at the front and rear. A powder skirt, wrist gaiters and adjustable cuffs help close the openings around your body.
Mesh-backed underarm vents provide airflow. The two-way front zipper is another useful adjustment when sitting or bending, rather than having to open the whole jacket from the neck.
Pockets you can organize
The chest pocket contains a phone sleeve, while a sleeve pocket holds your lift pass. Fleece-lined hand pockets and an internal mesh pocket give you other places for small items and gloves.
You can reach the hem adjustment through a hand pocket. The powder skirt also has attachment snaps for compatible pants, useful if your jacket tends to ride up when you bend.
Where we suggest it
- Châtel in March: Removable warmth suits the shift from freezing nights to milder afternoons.
- Davos in April: The shell and vents suit warmer descents, but keep a midlayer ready for cold lifts and changing weather.
