The Tignes guide

Tignes has five village levels, from Les Brévières at 1,550 m to Val Claret at 2,150 m, and shares 300 km of skiing with Val d’Isère. The high terrain and Grande Motte glacier make it a useful choice for a long ski season. Choose your village for lift access, atmosphere and budget.

The resort

Tignes has five village levels. The original village was submerged when the dam filled in 1952; Les Brévières retains traditional buildings below the higher, purpose-built neighborhoods. Compare each level by its lift access, accommodation and evening facilities.

The skiing

Tignes shares the Tignes–Val d’Isère area, formerly called Espace Killy, with 300 km of slopes at full operation. From Val Claret, the Perce-Neige funicular reaches 3,032 m and the Grande Motte cable car continues to 3,456 m. Each village has different access lifts, so check the map before choosing accommodation. Beginner lift arrangements also vary by learning area.

Snow & weather

Tignes is an option for early- and late-season skiing. The official 2026/27 calendar lists a progressive opening from November 21, the Val d’Isère link from November 28, and a May 2 closing date, subject to snow. Cold, wind and strong sunlight all matter when packing for this altitude. Compare monthly temperatures in °C and °F on the Tignes snow & weather page.

Lessons & ski schools

ESF has branches at Le Lac, Val Claret, Tignes 1800 and Les Brévières; other options include Evolution 2, Oxygène and New Generation. Choose a meeting point you can reach comfortably from your village, especially for an early children’s class.

Passes

Choose a Tignes-only pass or the full Tignes–Val d'Isère pass for all 300 km. Both are sold at the ticket offices and through the official shop at skipass-tignes.com; passes are free for under-8s and over-75s, and a 6-day-plus pass includes entry to Le Lagon, the resort's aquatic center.

Where to stay

The five village levels have different advantages. Val Claret (2,150 m) is highest and liveliest, with the funicular on the doorstep; Le Lac (2,100 m) is the center: shops, terraces, the lake; Le Lavachet (2,050 m) is its quieter neighbor; Tignes 1800 is built for families; and Les Brévières (1,550 m), the traditional village below the dam, offers a traditional setting with a lift back into the system.

Getting there

Bourg-Saint-Maurice is the nearest mainline station, about 40 minutes from Tignes by bus or taxi. TGV services connect it with French cities. From London, Eurostar Snow requires a change at Lille Europe; the outward train journey takes just under eight hours, before the resort transfer. Outward services for winter 2026/27 run on selected dates from December 19, 2026, through February 20, 2027. By road, follow the A430 to Albertville, N90 to Bourg-Saint-Maurice and D902 to Tignes. Lyon, Geneva, Chambéry and Grenoble airports are roughly two and a half to three hours away in good traffic; allow longer on winter Saturdays.

Beyond the pistes

Le Lagon is the aquatic center, included with the 6-day pass. Other activities include ice diving under the frozen lake, speed riding and La Banquise snow village; check booking requirements and operating conditions.

Who it suits

Tignes suits trips centered on high, open terrain and access to Val d’Isère. For a quieter, traditional setting, compare Les Brévières with the higher neighborhoods, allowing for its longer journey to the glacier.
