The resort

Val d’Isère’s stone-and-timber village surrounds an old church at 1,850 m. A planning scheme protects that character, while the ski area extends across several mountains above it.

The skiing

Four sectors fan out from the valley. Bellevarde, reached by the Olympique cable car, carries the Face de Bellevarde: the Olympic downhill face back to the village. Solaise, by its gondola, has sunnier slopes. La Daille, at the valley entrance, links directly toward Tignes; Le Fornet, up-valley, leads to the Pissaillas glacier via the Vallon de l'Iseran gondola. Val Park is at 2,500 m in the Combe du Mont Blanc, on the reverse side of Bellevarde. Together with Tignes it's the former Espace Killy: 300 km, 161 runs, 71 lifts, much of it high and open.

Snow & weather

The village is at 1,850 m, with much of the skiing higher and exposed to wind. The announced 2026/27 season is November 28 to May 2, subject to lift and snow conditions. Compare monthly temperatures in °C and °F on the Val d'Isère snow & weather page.

Lessons & ski schools

Schools include ESF Val d’Isère, Evolution 2, Oxygène, Progression, TDCski and Mountain Masters. English-language instruction is available; confirm the group level and meeting point rather than assuming all courses start in the main village.

Passes

Choose the full Tignes–Val d'Isère pass for all 300 km, or a Val d'Isère-only pass covering the local 150 km. Passes are sold by the lift company through its official shop at valdisere.ski; free for under-8s and over-75s.

Where to stay

The main village around the church has the atmosphere and the nightlife, with the Olympique and Solaise lifts at its heart. La Daille, at the entrance to the valley, is a base close to the Tignes link; Le Fornet, a hamlet at 1,930 m up-valley, is the quiet end with its own cable car. Free shuttles connect the three.

Getting there

The railhead is Bourg-Saint-Maurice: 30 km and about 40 minutes away, served by TGV and Eurostar, with regular shuttle buses up to the resort. From Geneva the official line is about 3 hours by car (Chambéry 2 h, Grenoble 2h30), and direct seasonal coaches run from the airports: the tourist office names Alpine Fleet, Altibus and Ben's Bus among the operators.

Beyond the pistes

The Aquasportif center has a pool, gym and wellness facilities. Signposted winter walks and snowshoe routes run through the valley. Winter speed riding, which combines skis with a wing, is another activity offered here.

Who it suits

Val d’Isère suits skiers planning to explore high terrain across several sectors. Choose between the main village, La Daille and Le Fornet according to the lifts you expect to use, and compare accommodation costs before committing to dates.
