Merino backing, not a padded lining
Ortovox uses two three-layer fabrics: one with a conventional backing and one with a wool-blend backing in selected areas. The merino sections sit at the chest and back; they are not a separate thick layer of insulation.
That makes the Ravine Plus a shell to build layers beneath, particularly for cold lift rides. Its loose fit provides room, but the wool content alone is not a reason to leave your warm midlayer behind.
Protection for snowy days
The waterproof laminate is rated to at least 20,000 mm. A helmet-compatible hood has a shaped peak and two-way adjustment, while cuffs, hem and a removable snow guard close the other openings.
Two-way underarm zippers let you vary the vent opening. They are useful when a short climb or a demanding run raises your temperature, without requiring you to take off the protective outer layer.
Movement and storage
The two-way front zipper can open from the bottom when you sit or need more space around the hips. At 860 g, this is a fully equipped freeride jacket rather than a stripped-back shell for minimal pack weight.
Dedicated phone, goggle and pass pockets keep those items apart from the large front pockets. The design suits skiers who want that storage and a roomy cut; it is less compelling if you prefer a close fit and very few features.
